Minutes of ALSB Technology Section
Annual Conference, Nashville Tenn.
August 14, 2003
The meeting, which was held in conjunction with the Marketing Section, was called to order at 12:15.
Lynda Oswald introduced herself and Bob Bennett as candidates for secretary/treas. of ALSB and encouraged everyone to attend the business meeting.
Program
Jody Blanke introduced the speaker: Chris Hoofnagle, Deputy Counsel for EPIC in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Hoofnagle described EPIC as an organization concerned with privacy, civil liberties and particularly now, The Patriot Act in the online environment, open government and FOIA.
His area of expertise is Consumer Financial Services.
He said that EPIC has a summer internship program for law and graduate students. For more info email him or visit the EPIC website.
Mr. Hoofnagle’s talk addressed recent developments in the past year:
Congress’s attention to the FCRA
FTC “Do Not Call” list
FTC American student list
Spam
Looking ahead, Mr. Hoofnagle identified the following issues:
Affiliate Sharing
New Technologies for digital rights management
Existing Business relationships
Customer management (CRM customer blacklist)
Use of SSN on college campuses.
The Marketing Section members left at the conclusion of the talk at 1:20.
New Business
The following slate of officers for the 2003-2004 year was presented:
Jody Blanke - Chair
Kurt Saunders - Vice Chair
Ronnie Cohen - Secretary
Motion to approve the slate was made by Robert Thompson and seconded by Mark Conrad and was unanimously approved by the members.
It was suggested that the section consider sponsoring a panel on teaching web courses, and other issues of pedagogy related to technology.
